Your only taking the bulk out, Not the length. Shears, and Thinning shears look completely different. Thinning shears have ridges on one side, and Cutting shears has a smooth blade.

If done right there will be nothing noticeable. Thinning shears are made to reduce bulk. But if used in one place too much or too close to the scalp, you will get little hairs poking out, that look like fly aways. So make sure you have your hair thinned the correct way.
