Using Scissors to Save Stylists’ Wrists

Wrist problems strike stylists at many different stages in their career. Sometimes, students in cosmetology school notice pain right away, while some stylists cut for 30 years before they start to notice tension. Still others never experience ergonomic pain.

Ergonomic hair shears typically have a bent thumb ring to make them more ergonomic, so that your thumb goes in at a more natural angle. This way, you’re not tweaking your thumb when holding your scissors.

All scissors should feel like this – they should be comfortable, and there should be no pain in your wrist when cutting with them or even simply when holding them!

If you’re noticing pain when you cut and hold your scissors, you need to switch to something more ergonomic right away! And if you’re one of those lucky people that hasn’t had wrist problems, it’s still a good idea to invest in a good pair of ergonomic scissors so you can continue to be pain-free!

What can you cut hair with?

What tool can be used to cut hair other than scissors? I saw a video on you tube of a hairstylist using some tool that he rubbed on the hair and the hair came off but not in a straight way when you use scissors. I want to cut hair without it looking like a straight line when you use scissors, what can I use?

Hmm… maybe the tool you’re talking about that were in the video are thinning shears? Those are similar to scissors but thin out the hair.
There are also hair razors (beware of using leg razors; I know firsthand how much "cutting" my hair with them damaged it – in fact, I’m still dealing with the split ends and damage it caused) that you can get at Beauty Supply stores which are more professional and aren’t as blunt and harsh as leg razors. Can get pricey, though.
Also, using scissors (regular or hair, your choice) can create "jagged" or edgy lines – not always straight. Cut your hair vertically with the ends facing up and snip your hair like that (instead of going horizontally which creates straight lines) so it will have the same effect as a razor. It’s much easier, looks better, doesn’t cause as much damage, and you don’t have to go out and buy a razor!

I have trust issues when it comes to hairstylists, please lend advice?

ok so My fav hairstylist moved to a new place and he was the only one I ever let do my hair. One chick at the salon cut my ear. another, chopped the layers so I looked like a christmas tree. So I have trouble trusting anyone else to do my hair. But alas I might have to. Now all I want done, are more layers and bangs. like blunt bangs. I have pics and stuff. but somehow ive known "professionals" who mess up cuts as simple as that. not simple for me obviously, but these dudes go to school for this stuff right? right. so, how can I trust someone to not mess up my hair? should I hunt down my old stylist? the one i liked? or should I let someone elses scissors snap away at my identity? lol advice?

I agree with you It’s had to find a hair stylist that I can always count on for a great haircut. They might do it great the first time and then butcher it later. I would study the work of the other stylists before making a decision. You might want to try a different hair salon. I just let my hair grow in and my friends cut the ends from time to time. Just because you go to school to learn a trade it doesn’t mean you are good at it. In fact, talent is required as well.

Is there such thing called a ‘layered full fringe’?

like you know each strand of hair over the forehead would look like a ‘very long slim triangle’ (because of how it is cut with scissors).

Can a normal hairstylist do this type of hairstyle for me?

I hope you understand what the hairstyle that Im describing looks like.

there is but i’m not sure that it is called layered full fringe. go to a good hairdresser. if you get a really good person they might charge you a bit more than a normal hairdresser that just works in a salon but they will be really good. describe the fringe to them and they will know what you mean and will tell you if they think a different fringe would look better on you as well.

Why do hairstylist seem to enjoy been scissor happy?

Seems like every hairstylist I go wants to cut off more than hair than really have to. If I ask for a trim they try to take more off even when I SPECIFICALLY asked them not to. I also asked them not to cut ANYTHING off not even split ends and they did it anyway! I even had one stylist turn me away from the mirror in hopes that I didn’t see what she was doing. Why do stylist do this? What’s their point??

I have had this, too. My idea is that they want you to try a new look on you and maybe you will like it, even if you like your current look. What I recommend is you specifically ask a stylist to show you how much they are taking off before they do. I do that every time i get my hair tipped.
